I often get asked what we should eat before and after a workout for somebody who does not wish to use sports nutrition supplementation. Nutrition is a very varied field and different things work for different individuals which is all dependant on hormone levels, body type, metabolic rate, etc, however a good rule of thumb is to ensure you eat something within 1-2 hrs before training. It used to be thought that a simple sugar, High Glycaemic food was the thing to eat before a workout however Sport Science has now suggested this is not the case and rather a Lower Glycaemic food is more appropriate and combine it with some protein to help protect the muscles from breakdown and support the rebuilding process. Provided you have good sugar management levels it may be a good idea to take on board the simple, refined sugars post workout again with some protein. The sugars will spike Insulin levels and help drive the protein and glucose into the muscles for enhanced recovery.
